Scarlett March lives to hunt the Fenris--the werewolves that took her eye when she was defending her sister Rosie from a brutal attack. Armed with a razor-sharp hatchet and blood-red cloak, Scarlett is an expert at luring and slaying the wolves. She's determined to protect other young girls from a grisly death, and her raging heart will not rest until every single wolf is dead.
Rosie March once felt her bond with her sister was unbreakable. Owing Scarlett her life, Rosie hunts ferociously alongside her. But even as more girls' bodies pile up in the city and the Fenris seem to be gaining power, Rosie dreams of a life beyond the wolves. She finds herself drawn to Silas, a young woodsman who is deadly with an ax and Scarlett's only friend--but does loving him mean betraying her sister and all that they've worked for?
My review: 5 stars
Plot: I was pulled in at first, because the prologue was intriguing and unique to many fairy tale re-tellings. However, after that it slowed down quite a bit. I struggled to push through, but am so glad I did! The last 100 pages were so intense, I was literally holding my breath and ended up crying at one point. Just goes to show you should stick with a book until the end!
Characters: I didn't like Scarlett too much, because I felt like she was forcing Rosie to help hunt. Rosie was very similar to me, and I related to her much better. I liked her chapters better than Scarlett's chapters.
Setting: I appreciated that the book started in their hometown, and then they moved into the city later in the book. It helped me realize that their seclusion was in result of the hunt, and the move was as well.
Overall: As I said above, this book's ending blew me away. While it was bittersweet, it was a great ending and wasn't what you would expect from the book. If you like fairy tale re-tellings, definitely read this one!
